My mother was always helpful to a person coming to our home for a hand out (food or money). When possible, she would find odd jobs for them to do, thereby allowing them to maintain their dignity.
My father had a strong feeling to give of his funds. He had a wonderful memory. When his father died when he was eight years old, and he had to get work ending his formal education. His mother was left with 6 children, the oldest 9 years old. The Rabbi at The Temple B’nai Jehudah came to the support of the family. Dad supplemented his retirement for the rest of his life.
My father had a strong feeling towards giving of himself and of his means.
